COLLECTIONS

Sculpture defines Mercè Cañadell’s artistic practice. Working in different media, most of her work is figurative but she uses abstraction when the creative process evolves in this direction.
Cañadell has previously worked with materials from wax to cast bronze, carved wood as well as ceramics, metal work and kiln formed glass. However her overall compositions are clearly informed by a formal training in sculpture. The use of variety of materials and the learning of other technical skills have been acquired to enable her to create a new body of pieces that are unique and original. This is something that appeals to her.

Conversations

My work is an extension of my self-reflexion where I manifest my desire to evolve and expand on a conscious and spiritual level. Conversations is a Gallery where I include a contrasting variety of works which are mostly related to the same theme and are initial starting points for new developments and explorations.

Evolving Shape

Evolving Shape is a series of 4 unique pieces of cast bronze. Each piece is attached to a flat bronze surface that mimics the round countours of the sculpture and complements the overall composition. The use of distintive coloured bronze patinas for each creation enhaces the form and fixes it on something solid. That allows the sculpture to emerge with movement and character. These pieces are strong but at the same time vulnerable and exposed.

Artic Foxes

I have been working on a series of ceramic sculptures that takes its inspiration from the changes and effects of Global Warming in the fringe lands of Earth's Polar Regions. This series of pieces have been designed and hand-built with white stoneware clay during a period of years and then glazed one by one and finished during a intermittent period of time. Botanic Gardens

Most of my sculptural work for 'Sculpture in Context' exhibition is related to the natural world and the human configuration... There is in art no image more evocative than the human form. When it is surrounded with Nature and anchored on the ground in the extraordinary setting of the Botanic Gardens the sculptures absorb the sense of life, the fundamental human presence that I wish to convey in my sculpture.

Project Holmes and Pole Star

Project Holmes and Pole Star are private commissions made to be displayed in a contemporary new house located in Sitges (Barcelona). The project consists of three works. Two of them are signaly flat pieces composed of handmade lettering made in sand cast bronze. The third commission is a large ceramic sculpture for the back garden of the house.

Utility

Utility is a study of two different objects : GOBLETS & CANDELABRA.

Moving towards DESIGN and FUNCTIONALITY, both approaches are related to the idea of how we create items, applying arrangements and features in order to conceive something visually original, with high artistic value and with purpose. Objects that hold an aspect of practicality, but have been made following lines of asthetics and beauty.
