Born in Barcelona, Mercè Cañadell studied Ceramics and Sculpture at Massana School of Art & Design from 1990-93. Previously she had learned ceramics at several workshops and master classes. including an apprenticeship with a Fine Art Bronze Foundry (Exametal S.A.) from 1988-89.

She has continued researching and mastering a variety of crafts. In learning to use and combine different materials, she has expanded her understanding of the making and the meaning of her art work. Some of the skills developed during this early period included mould making, the “lost wax” technique for casting, sculptural ceramic construction and ceramic glazes , woodcarving, metal work and painted textiles.

She has been resident in Ireland since 2002 and graduated from NCAD in Dublin with Bdes (Hons) in Glass Design in 2015.

One important part of her artistic passion involves metal work and bronze casting in a Foundry. She learned this first in Barcelona and currently in Dublin she has access to foundry workshop space and facilities. She is an artist that enjoys the stimulus of working in different media. Her sculptures in bronze, glass and ceramics have been exhibited regularly in galleries throughout Ireland and Spain.
